The art of the summer tan

(NC)-All year round you've been diligent in protecting your skin from the harmful effects of the sun. The result? Skin that is beautifully smooth and supple. All that you need now is a little bit of colour to create that summer glow. But, be sure your sun protection efforts don't go to waste by over-exposing your skin to the summer sun. 

Self-tanning lotions, like RoC Minesol Bronze - Self Tanning Multi-Position Spray, are safe alternatives in obtaining naturally sun-kissed skin all summer long without exposing yourself to the ravaging UV rays. While self-tanners come in a variety of different forms, they all work by essentially staining the top layer of the skin and should be applied with care. 

Here are some tried and true tips for creating the perfect sunless tan: 

. Make sure you use a good exfoliating body scrub. Prepping the skin to be smooth and even will help in applying the self-tanning lotion in a more uniform manner, preventing streaks and blotchy patches. 

. If the skin is dry and dehydrated, the self-tanning lotion will likely deposit in these areas and may appear uneven. Moisturizing is an essential step in successful self-tanning. Apply lotion generously to the newly exfoliated skin and allow it to absorb. 

. If you have sensitive skin, it is best to avoid shaving your legs for several hours before applying the self-tanner. The chemicals in the lotion may cause a reaction with newly shaved skin. 

. Self-tanners work fast! Make sure you wash your hands often throughout the process to ensure your cuticles and palms aren't stained. Use a soapy nailbrush to scrub palms, fingers, and fingernails. 

. Although self-tanners provide a beautiful bronze color, most do not provide protection from the sun. Remember, it is still highly important to use a sunscreen when exposing self-tanned skin to the sunlight. 

Worshipping the Sun Goddess 

If you are one of the many who enjoy relaxing in the sun, you may opt for obtaining a tan naturally. However, if you want to maintain your sun-kissed skin for as long as possible, it is best to apply an after-sun lotion, like RoC Minesol Tan Prolonging Lotion which will help prevent your skin from dehydrating and peeling. If used regularly, your tan will last well past the summer sun and your skin will be soft and supple. As always, remember to use a sunscreen when exposing your skin to the sun.
