Raj Television Network Ltd is nearly Rs 400 million worth company. The company runs multi TV Channels in South India. And planning to start a News Channel soon. The company has announced its planning to enter the cine field. As a first step, they are going to produce Tamil feature films with leading Tamil actors from next April. After some time, they are planning to produce movies in other South Indian regional languages like Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada. As per the company statement, the main reason for the plan to produce movies is due to the competition in the satellite rights to telecast a movie in TV Channel. Harikrishna scores music for 'Krishna', to be produced by Ramesh Yadav.   Poor response from Non-Bengali audiences for 'Bong Connection' : Cinema from West Bengal made a valiant attempt at scripting success by releasing "The Bong Connection" in several Indian cities but saw its fortunes nosedive at the box office, raising questions about the ability of the eastern film industry to offer successful commercial fare to a larger audience group. The film, directed by Anjan Dutt and starring Victor Banerjee, Parambrata Chatterjee, Raima Sen and Shayan Munshi, narrates the story of two Bengali boys - one who comes to India from the US in search of his roots and the other who goes to the US thinking the West has more to offer - through a satirical plot. But the English/Bengali movie, which intended to make audiences laugh at the intrinsic eccentricities of a typical Bengali family, fails to convey the satire to audiences not familiar with how Bengalis react to certain situations and their lingo.   An offer to cast infant daughter rejected :  Model-turned-actor Himanshu Malik had gone to Sajid Khan for a role. Burman's song "Dilbar dil se pyare" in "Caravan", she will dance to the same number again for episodes of Ektaa Kapoor's "Teen Kahaaniyan, Teen Raaz" to be telecast Monday and Tuesday. "This was Ektaa's idea. And, of course, I couldn't say no to her. She's such a sweetheart," Aroona told "In fact, I originally performed the 'Dilbar' number with Ektaa's father Jeetu-ji (Jeetendra). Fans were asked to choose one from a short-listed panel of four actresses.  The voting was done through mobile messages and magazines. Genelia beat Asin, Bhumika and Trisha to be chosen for the lead role in "Sathyam in Love". Popular star Shivaraj Kumar will play the male lead in the film.     I enjoy both cinematography and direction, says Dinesh Babu Bangalore, Cinematographer-turned-filmmaker Dinesh Babu is a name to reckon with in the Kannada film industry. He is one of the few directors whose art is firmly founded in photography. "I started my career as a photographer and, even after I became a director, I have worked as a cinematographer for most of my films. I enjoy working both as a director and as a cinematographer." After working as a cinematographer in more than 30 Tamil films, he debuted as a director with the Tamil movie "Ananda Aradhanai". But it was the Kannada film "Suprabhatha" that gave his career a new turn. There was no looking back for him after that. "A chance meeting with Vishnuvardhan in Chennai made me sit and write a different type of script for a Kannada film. Though he was already a big star in the Kannada film industry then, he told me I should write a story without bothering about his screen image. That is how the story of 'Suprabhatha' was created." Apart from being a hit filmmaker, Dinesh Babu is also a trendsetter. He is the one who introduced a hi-definition digital camera in "Magic Ajji" and "Kanakambari". Right now he is doing a comedy with actor Jaggesh. "It will be an out-and-out comedy on the lines of 'Hendthige Helthini'. Another film is on the cards for producer Ramesh Yadav with 'Nenapirali' Prem as the hero."  Excerpts from an exclusive chat: Q: Can you tell us something about your life before you came to the Kannada film industry? A: I am from Kerala. I was interested in films from my childhood. I went to the Pune Film Institute for a course in cinematography. I got my first break as a cinematographer in director R. Selvaraj's "Railway Platform". My work was appreciated and I started getting offers. I have worked in more than 30 Tamil films including "Udayageetham". I got into direction with the Tamil film "Ananda Aradhanai".  Then a chance meeting with Vishnuvardhan in Chennai made me sit and write a different kind of script for a Kannada film. Though he was already a big star in the Kannada film industry then, he told me that I should write the story without bothering about his screen image. That is how the story of "Suprabhatha" was created.  Q: You have done many films with Vishnuvardhan, but it is "Suprabhatha" that is remembered all the time. Was it difficult to create another film like that? A: I don't agree. Even "Laali" is being talked about in superlatives to this date. Vishnuvardhan got his best actor award for this film and I got the best director award.  Yes, I did many films with Vishnuvardhan, and I am proud to say that they were different from each other. I did a revenge drama like "Nishabdha" and the narrative technique was Western. I took a huge risk in this film by making it without any songs. I made many comedies as well.  Q: "Amruthavarshini" is another trend-setting film you made with Suhasini and Ramesh Arvind. Did you base this script on a Hollywood film? A: Many people have asked me the same question again and again. I would like to clarify that I might have been inspired by an English novel before I started working on the script. But I shot the film mostly in Kodai and Ooty and most of the picturisations were spontaneous and decided on the spot. It was technically my best film and my best script. I got an award for best scriptwriting for the film.  Q: Anant Nag is another favourite actor of yours. But you did only comedies with him. Why didn't you try to make an emotional film with Anant as he is such a versatile actor? A: I had to make commercially viable films with Anant who, as you said, is certainly a complete actor. He is also my favourite actor. My first film with Anant was "Hendthige Helthini", and it was a murder mystery laced with comedy.  Then a series of films brought out the best in Anant. I used him in the recently released "Neenello Naanalle", based on the Telugu hit "Nuvvosthaanante Nenoddantaana". And I enlarged an entire comedy sequence to showcase his talent.  Q: Most of your films are based on your stories, but there have been exceptions like the remakes -- "Chitra" and "Neenello Naanalle". A: I would have preferred to make original films, based on my own scripts. But sometimes, commercial compulsions and pressures of relations in the industry have made me do the remakes.  Q: You have also worked with young stars like Upendra in "Hollywood", Ravichandran in "Panduranga Vittala" and Puneet Raj Kumar in "Abhi", besides a multifaceted personality like Shankar Nag. A: Yes, you are right. Thankfully, I have carved out a name in the Kannada industry. I can go to any big hero with a script and I am sure I will be heard with rapt attention. All the people you have mentioned above are talented and I had an exciting experience working with them.  I did a film in 48 hours with artists like Shankar Nag and Anant in the lead and it was a wonderful experience. I set the trend and, thereafter, there were many attempts to make the film in 48 hours and 36 hours, and now a film has been made in just two hours.  Q: You have also worked as a cinematographer. Which work is more satisfying to you? A: I started my career as a photographer and even after I became a director, I have done cinematography of most of my films. I enjoy working both as a director and as a cinematographer.  Direction is a creative job where you have to create something and channelise as well as supervise the work in other technical departments. That way, a director is like a painter who makes use of the canvass, brush and the paint.  But working as a cinematographer is a tension-free job as you are not responsible for a film's success or failure.  Q: You were also a trendsetter in using a hi-definition digital camera for the first time in the country.  A: Yes, I used the high-definition camera technique in two of my films - "Magic Ajji" and "Kanakambari" - with different types of stories. The 'HD cam' allowed me to do on-the-spot colour corrections and helped me see the result of what I had shot almost instantaneously.  The camera has a set of built-in filters, which required minimum lighting. Above all, most of the post-production features can be incorporated at the production stage itself.  But the post-production work took over 10 months, which included incorporating 40-minute-long graphics. A team of 20 people from Mumbai and Chennai worked to put the graphics together. The graphics included juxtaposing 2D and 3D animation graphics.  Q: What are your future projects? A: I am doing a new comedy film with Jaggesh as the hero. It will be an out-and-out comedy on the lines of "Hendthige Helthini". Another film is for producer Ramesh Yadav in which Prem is doing the lead role.

Vamsi's 'Anumanaspadam' is a let down (REVIEW)

The ghost of Tamil Nadu's slain forest brigand Veerappan haunts ace Telugu director Krishna Vamsi's latest release "Anumanaspadam". The film belies big expectations because of its dreary screenplay and outdated comedy. Vamsi, who regaled audiences over 15 years ago with murder mystery "Anveshana", fails to recreate the same magic. Up-and-coming Aryan Rajesh plays a reporter who plans to unearth the fortune of dead Veerappan. His character has negative shades. Hansa Nandini plays a money-minded girl and she agrees to pretend to be in 'love' with Rajesh for the sake of a fortune.

Vijay again !
Vijay's Pokiri released for Pongal is a commericial hit, Ajith's Aalwar is running second to Pokiri. The Dhanush-starrer "Thiruvilayadal Aarambham", a laugh riot, is ideed going great guns.

The top five Tamil films are:

1."Pokiri" - Director: Prabhu Deva. Telugu film "Pokiri", starring Mahesh Babu, was the biggest hit of 2006 in Andhra Pradesh. Though the Tamil remake is doing good business at the box office, it seems the film may not repeat the success story of the original.

2."Aalwar" - Director: Chella. After the stupendous success of "Varalaaru", people expected another 'super' film from Ajith. Instead they got a disaster called "Aalwar". The film is a huge disappointment for everyone, including his fans.
 
3."Thiruvilaiyadal Aarambham" - Director: Bhoopathy Pandian. This is turning out to be a big hit for Dhanush, a kind of rebirth for the actor. The film depicts the lighter side of the actor.

4."Thamirabharani" - Director: Hari: Actor Vishal is in yet another film that looks like "Thimiru" and "Sivappathikaram".

Shivrajkumar's Thayiya Madilu :
Kannada cinema actor Shivrajkumar's new film is Thayiya Madilu. Rakshitha plays the heroine role, Jayasudha, Avinash are also in the star cast. Thayiya Madilu film is directed and produced by S.Narayan. The audio of the film was already released and it contains six songs.

Annavaram Pavan Kalyan : Pavan Kalyan stars in Telugu remake of 'Thirupachi' . After "Bangaram", Pavan Kalyan fans are eagerly waiting for "Annavaram", a Telugu remake of the Tamil superhit "Thirupachi". The film is expected to hit the marquee Dec 29. "It will be a feast for Pavan fans," says producer R.B. Choudury, a remake specialist who bounced back with smashing hit "Andala Ramudu". "Annavaram" is Pavan's first film to have a rural backdrop. Asin, who returns to the Telugu screen after a series of successful Tamil films, plays the female lead. Beemaneni Srinivasa Rao, directs "Annavaram", being touted as the costliest project undertaken by the Mega Supergood Films so far.The biggest hits of Pavan, younger brother of Chiranjeevi, were "Susvagatham" and "Kushi", both of which were remakes of Tamil Vijay-starrers. Thiruvananthapuram, Darling of the Malayalam filmgoers, Padmapriya, Sunday said she gels well with mature actors like Mammootty and Mohanlal. "I feel they are more mature and it is the directors who decide the cast when it comes to a film and I have no problem acting with superstars," said Padmapriya while interacting with reporters here, after her latest Malayalam film "Yes Your Honour" was screened. Padmapriya, in her early twenties, has played the lead opposite to ageing superstars Mammootty and Mohanlal, who are more than twice her age.

'Sirivantha' secures top spot among Kannada films
Bangalore, 'Sirivantha', which released on the eve of Dussehra, climbed to the top of this list on the eve of Diwali.

The top five Kannada films are: 1. "Sirivantha": The film did not have a great opening, but has steadily improved its collections and is now on top of this list. The Vishnuvardhan-starrer is proving to be a big hit with the female audience. 2. "Aishwarya": The film is still on top in the city centres, while it is not doing so well in the B and C centres. The collections have exceeded Rs.10 million in the Bangalore distribution area. Deepika's glamour and Upendra's performance are the film's main attractions.3. "Jothe Jotheyalli": The film has become a surprise hit in Bangalore and Mysore. The collections continue to be good even in the fourth week of the film that features Prem and Ramya.

'Shah Rukh is a great dancer'
Mumbai, Shah Rukh Khan's dancing abilities have so impressed choreographer Rajiv Soorti that he calls the star "a great dancer".
Soorti, who has Shah Rukh dancing to his tunes in Farhan Akhtar's "Don", says: "He is extremely energetic and talented. Needless to say he's a great dancer. His passion for work is truly infectious."
"I'm glad that I got a chance to do two original songs - 'Aaj Ki Raat' and 'Moriye Re'. I was given complete freedom to explore my creativity. Farhan is very cooperative," he adds.

Siddharth shines in 'Bommarillu' Review

The actor regains his lover-boy image with his performance as a youth rebelling against a possessive father. Siddharth's final confrontation with his lovable but smothering father is his best scene so far. Pretty Genelia delivers another knockout performance as an innocent girl. She excels in scenes where her character tries to work out friendly equations with the members of her would-be husband's family.

Puneet's 'Aajay' tops Kannada box office
Bangalore, The pick of the Kannada film fortnight is "Aajay", the Puneet Rajkumar film that made record collections in the first week.

The top five Kannada films are:

1. "Aajay": The film has had a fantastic opening, collecting around Rs.8 million in the first week in Bangalore and peripheral theatres. In Mysore city it collected Rs.1.9 million from three centres. 

2. "My Autograph": The film is marching towards the 100-day mark. Actor-director Sudeep's remake of a Tamil hit is doing well in the summer holidays - even better than the later releases. 

4. "Hatavadi": The film has completed 50 days in some centres. It has not done well at the box office, except for B centres, despite good reviews.

5. "Chellata": The rib-tickler featuring TV star Ganesh has drawn its own audiences. The collections have been satisfactory in centres like Bangalore and Mysore.

Karnataka plans Rs.100 mn memorial to Rajkumar Kannada superstar : Bangalore, The Karnataka government has decided to set up a memorial to Kannada thespian Rajkumar in the city at a cost of Rs.100 million, official sources said here Tuesday. To be located in the 20-acre sprawling Kanteerava studio where the icon's body was laid to rest last week, the memorial will have a permanent exhibition to showcase the actor's contribution to the Kannada film industry over the last five decades. It will also have a stock of movies, dialogue, scripts, songs and other memorabilia associated with the actor who passed away here Wednesday. "We plan to build the memorial in the next six months. A committee is being set up with representatives from the Kannada film industry, Rajkumar's family members and officials to draw up a blueprint for the memorial," Keeping in view Rajkumar's long association with the studio, set up by the state government way back in 1966, the actor's family will be requested to gift his awards, trophies and souvenirs to the studio for public display in the memorial building. "Though the Kannada film industry no longer uses the studio's outdated facilities, it continues to be a landmark for the historical role it played over the decades for the growth and development of Kannada cinema," the official said.

Ajith's Tirupathi
Ajith, is now ready with 'Tirupathi' to give another hit after Paramasivan. Ajith's Tirupathi is directed by Perarasu and will be released for Tamil new year. Sada plays the lady love to Ajith in Thirupathi. Audio sales of Tirupathi is a huge hit, and as per sources, the music shops all over the state placing more orders with the Audio company. Bharadwaj's music is creating a stirr in the market. The introductory song ( typical Perarsu style for Vijay ) “Tirupati Vandha….” sung by Shankar Mahadevan pleased the Ajith fans. Out of six, five are fast numbers. And Ajith fans eagerly awaiting the release of Tirupathi. Ajith, Sada, Bharadwaj, AVM Saravanan and Director Perarasu were also present at the Audio release function. 
 

Darshan puts 'Mandya' on top
Action star Darshan's appeal has made "Mandya" the top Kannada film of the fortnight. 

1. "Mandya": Director Om Prakash Rao's film, with Darshan and Rakshitha in the lead, had a great opening with the first week's collections amounting to about Rs.7 million in the Bangalore-Kolar-Tumkur area. 

2. "Rama Shama Bhama": The film's success is guaranteed. Multilingual actor Kamal Haasan returns to Kannada cinema after a gap of 18 years. This remake of Tamil hit "Sati Leelavathi" is a hit all over Karnataka. 

'Chatrapathi' wins fortnight's crown

The top five films are:

1. "Chatrapathi": Director Rajamouli has teamed up with action star Prabhas to deliver a slick action film. Comedy and good songs have helped making it a winner.

2. "Athadu": Action star Mahesh's charisma and Trivikram's crisp presentation have made the film cross the 50-day mark in 204 centres.

3. "Political Rowdy": Despite opening to a good response, veteran Mohan Babu's comeback plans could go awry due to a heavy dose of comedy that is supposed to be political satire.

4. "Good Boy": Rohit teams up with director Reddy again, but poor narration could go against the message-centric film.

5. "Mogudu Pellam O Dongodu": Director Venky's unique three-character film is doing well in a few centres, though it is not a big winner.

AMITABH ANGRY ON MISSING HOLI SCENE 
Amitabh Bachchan is associated with the tinsel world's Holi festival more than any other artiste. Recently, he got too annoyed to miss Holi scene in his forthcoming 'Waqt-The Race Against Time' produced by Vipul Doshi. He regretted this profusely, and reminded the producer that the movies with his Holi songs sold better in the market. Incidentally, the movie has Big B, Akshay Kumar and Priyanka Chopra in the cast, while the Holi song has been picturized on Akshay and Priyanka only. Though the movie is due for release in April, a special show was organized for the cast in a Mumbai mini theatre that was attended by Amitabh, his wife and son Abhishek, among others. 
While everyone praised the movie, Big B complained to the producer that he has been missing in the Holi song. Amitabh was remembering his days when he was picturized-playing Holi with Rekha in 'Silsila', with Jaya Bhaduri in 'Sholay' and with Hema Malini in the recent 'Bagbaan'. Big B is proud of his Holi song, which is repeated with great fanfare at social functions even now. However, he forgets that despite his Holi song, 'Silsila' fell flat at the box office! The song remains a hit though.

 Kannada Cinema News :

 1) "Akash": The Kannada film has collected around Rs.3 million in two weeks in the Mysore distribution area and nearly Rs.7 million in Bangalore. The Puneet-Ramya pair is the film's major attraction. Its massive success has proved once again producer Parvathamma Raj Kumar's Midas touch.

2) "Varsha": While "Akash" had an awesome opening, Vishnuvardhan's Kannada cinema "Varsha", released a week earlier, is slowly becoming a silent super-hit. Female audiences are backing the film in a big way. The film, produced by Rockline Venkatesh and directed by S. Narayan, is a remake of the Malayalam hit "Hitler". 

3) "Gunna": Only two Kannada films are doing well this summer, while all the others are just proving to be duds and mediocre. "Gunna", released last week, is one more mediocre film but has been able to attract some audience in the opening mainly because Sudeep has a guest role. 

4) "Rakshasa": The film will not be able to recover its huge costs, but is still doing well in a few city centres. The film's scenes of excessive violence have put off female audiences. 

5) "Kashi": The Sudeep-starrer is just an average film at the box office, and the distributors may just be able to recover their costs. But the producer, who has sold the film at a rate below the production cost, is bound to lose. The film's B and C collections are so-so.

NTR's next film will be directed by Atanokkade fame Surendra for the production of Valluripalli Ramesh. Production will start in September.

B.Madhu (Tagore producer)will act as executive producer for Chiranjeevi's next film that will be directed by Murugudas (Tagore's story writer). Anjana production banner will produce this film and Paruchuri Brothers will pen the dialogues. 

Atanokkade 100 days function on Harikrishna's bday 
100 days function of Kalyan Ram's Atanokkade is planned for 2nd September. 2nd of September is the birthday of Harikrishna. Also,Kalyan Ram's next film started on 19th August. Regular shooting will start on 5th September.

Chakram unit - Meet the press
In a pressmeet that was held today morning at Prasanth Kutir, unit of Chakram spoke to the media. Prabhas, Krishnamraju, Krishnavamsi, producers Sivaraju, Venkatraju, music director Chakri, Nizam distributor Sunil and others attended this event. Prabhu, editor of Cinestar Magazine, initiated the pressmeet by saying that Chakram is gathering good response. He appreciated the way Krishnavamsi moulded the film and also the guts of Prabhas for doing such a film though he has an action hero image. Krishnamraju spoke on this occassion. He had some interesting things to say about the film -"I saw this film only yesterday. This is one of those films in the recent times that will influence you a lot. Krishnavamsi did an amazing job with the film. Infact, if Krishnavamsi ever came to me with the script, I wouldnot dare making this film. Reason is that the film deals with lot of preaching and I would be skeptical about people receiving it well. But Krishnavamsi brought all this out in a very touching manner. I heard that people are feeling bad about Prabhas's character getting killed in the end. But I feel that this character will stand evergreen. Coming to that, most of the actors prefer doing these kind of films at a later stage in the career. But Prabhas took the guts and did this one. I should say, he lived in this one. Also, Jagamanta Kutumbam song by Sastry garu is a great lyric. Chakri did a great job with composition. ". Krishnamraju also emphasized that it reminds him of his times when he came to know that there is a special show of Chakram for only women at Guntur. Chakri started out by saying that there is nothing much to say since Krishnamraju said everything that he wanted to say. But he added his impressions about Krishnavamsi. "When I signed up the film, everyone warned me that it would be a torture with Krishnavamsi. So initially I was scared a bit. But it is surprising that he okayed my tunes in the first go. I was worried if he really liked them. Jagamanta Kutumbam, Konchem Karamga, Oke Oka mata, songs came out good. They had good lyrics too. Lot of folks are telling me that Jagamanta Kutumbam will definitely get an award. The recognition that the song got is extraordinary.".When it was the turn of Prabhas, he said that he is very much satisified with the role. He also added that - "Initially some people thought that I might not be a good fit for the film. But after the release, they are appreciating me. The credit goes to Krishnavamsi. It is the talent of Krishnavamsi that he was able to mould me into the role. My favorite scene from the film is when Charmi realizes the truth and also the scene where I had to tell Prakashraj about the truth.". Prabhas comes up with his logic on the hero dying in the film. "A hero dies in a film doesnot mean that it wont work at the boxoffice. My uncle did Amaradeepam which is a silverjubilee film at the boxoffice". Finally, the director Krishnavamsi added his few words- "This film is based on a song that Sirivennela penned a while ago. But if not for Prabhas, I wouldnot have made the film at this time. He has got good flexibility as an actor. I am so impressed with him in most of the scenes. I would say that he is a born actor.". He also praised Prabhas on his dedication. Talking about a risky shot, Krishnavamsi added that "When we were filming a chase scene, a jeep coming so fast should skid and come to Prabhas who is standing there. However, the jeep skid and hit Prabhas very hard. The entire unit was worried but he immediately got up and got ready for the next shot." Mahesh defends Meera's smooch scene in 'NAZAR' : 

On the occasion of launching the India Pakistan peace march, the famous filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt reached Delhi. Incidentally, he also shares a lot of controversy about Pakistani actress 'Meera'and his latest film 'Nazar', showing a kissing scene involving Meera. This has created an adverse situation in Pakistan, resulting in seeking a ban on Pakistani actors working in India. Meera has also sought protection from Pakistani government against such elements. However, Bhatt doesn't consider this issue as critical. "It's a routine gossip in the film industry. Unfortunately, this matter relates to a Pakistani actress for her smooch scenes in my latest movie 'Nazar'." He adds that the Indian film industry is growing very fast. And Indian movies are very popular abroad. He wondered why people behave like this. "We show only that the viewers want to see." Answering a question if such a type of film should be banned, he said that his last film 'Murder' had its golden jubilee. All scenes in a film depend on the need of story. "We can't join any extra scene." Answering our question if Meera should leave India, Bhatt said that she came to India on a work permit visa and nobody could take any action against her. Whenever the permit visa expires she should move out. " I don't want to say any think more about her."

SRK Adjudged BEST Actor, Rani Best Actress :
Millions of Hindi movie watchers' heartthrob Rekha presented the best actor award to Shah Rukh Khan, and quoted a couplet on love. She also said that there is a commonality between her and the Filmfare awards inasmuch as both entered their fifth decade. Saif Ali Khan emceed the show along with Sonali Bendre and Farida Jalal. This is to recall that Saif and his Shah Rukh Khan had brought the house down with their wicked swipes at Bollywood celebrities only last year. 


Director Jayaraj's By the People : Jayaraj is planning to do the second part of the hit film For the People. The film has been named By the People. The film is produced by Sabu Cherian under the banner of Anandbairavi. The screen play and dialogues are penned by the famous dramatist,novelist and Kannada film writer Sunil Parameswaran.Sunil Parameshwaran had written. ‘Ananthabhadran’, which was made into a film by Santosh Shivan. This will be Sunil’s first film in Malayalam. The film has the same theme of For the People and importance will be given to youth. The success of ‘4 The People’ inspired its producer and director to come up with its sequel. ‘By The People’ is the name of the new film. The film’s shooting begins on the 10th of March. 

Kamal's Mumbai Express on 14th April
Kamal and Singitam created wonders in the past with Pushpaka Vimanam, Vichitra Sodharulu, Michael Madana Kamaraju. Now they are working again for Mumbai Express. The film is slated to release in three languages including Telugu on 14th April.
