The All-‘TIME’ 100 Best Films
(by : Manohar Chimmani - Tollywood Director )
It’s really discouraging and dis-heartening to see only three Indian movies in a full length list of ‘100 All-TIME Best Films’ chosen by the Time critics. At the same time I felt very happy to see our own Maniratnam’s Nayakan, a terrific gangster epic in the Godfather style, from south.

Congrats
Mani! No doubt, Guru Dutt’s Pyaasa is a great movie and one of the best soulfully presented
romantic melodramas of Hindi cinema. Still, I feel Guru Dutt’s own Kaagaz ke Phool and Saheb Beebi aur Gulaam are much better movies in all aspects when compared to the Time chosen Pyaasa. Also, it’s not The Apu Trilogy but the well known and world known Pather Panchali, Jalasagar and Charulatha own the best films position in Satyajit Ray’s Filmography. In the case of Mani too one can not say that Nayakan is the only best film. There are many. No wonder, including Simi Garewal, total Hindi film fraternity is critical about the Time’s 100 all-time best.
Yes. We have at least one Mother India in old gems and one Lagaan in the newbies. And what about the films of Raj Kapoor, Bimol Roy, Rithvik Ghatak, Shyam Benegal and many more creative movie moghuls? Now, the point is our very own Tollywood. We have a treasury of at least couple of dozens classics. Even when compared to international standards also, we have one Malleshwari, one Devadasu and many more. One can easily say that the so called All TIME Hundred Movies list is incomplete as well as illogical. The makers of the list - Richard Corliss and Richard Schickel are
Time critics. They are no way connected to Indian Cinema. It’s not that easy and not appropriate too to measure or weigh our films with their standards. Our films are our films. They have their own fragrance. We enjoy them, we love them, and we remember them. Let’s not bother about an outsider’s
certificate.
