Is Television responsible for deteriorating standards of Indian
Cinema ? (by : V'nkat kumar
- Chennai )
How many of us used to cherish the Sunday afternoon movies on DD not so long
|
ago.
It was not out of lack of choice that we sat glued to our TV sets watching
movies that won National Awards. In introspect you would realize that even the movies that used to grace the Silver screen then were never this
bad. You always had substandard movies but only that the yardstick used then was far superior
and if the same was used to gauge the quality of today's movies only a hand full from the past decade would pass the acid test, Box Office
collections not withstanding. With the Influx of Cable Channels, in an attempt to forg ahead in the channel wars and to
again TRPs, they have resorted to excessive eye candy and gloss and in due process
Quality has taken a beating. It is ,probably, in keeping with our inability to tell quality from content that has led us to believe all we
see. Nowadays even good movies from other parts of the world don't make it to Indian Shores.I guess the only 2 reasons could be responsible for this sudden surge of
Thrillers, Horror, adventure and Special Efx Flicks is to entice the vernacular viewers and the aficionados of such eye
andy, which they identify as synonymous of Hollywood and the Other enthusiasts of serious cinema would prefer the DVD option or just left to whine in discontent about the lack of choices. It is perhaps the change that
globalization brings with it, a pot pourri of cultures where gloss gains
attention first and over time people learn to tell the Flash In The Pan stuff from enduring Quality!!!!!
