If Music be the Food of Love …Play on (William Shakespeare, Twelfth Night) Gone are

the years where music was from the Heart, Mind and Soul. I have been an avid listener of film songs for so many years, from the days of M.S Viswanathan to the contemporary works of today. The songs these days are more techno oriented and lack artistic flow. That is the reason why they do not last. More time is given to technology than to creativity. Songs do not have depth, feel and arrangements to make them a piece to stand out and last a few years. They are immediately forgotten the moment the movie comes to a close. Hits have become a rare phenomenon! There was a time when there were many hit songs in one movie … now we have many movies with no hit songs or perhaps one hit song. Is this because of technology? Lack of creativity? Or is it because the Music Directors are not educated in music, harmony and theory of Carnatic and Western music? Music Directors like Illayaraja and other Directors of yester years were well grounded in nuances of music both western and Indian. This is something to be assessed by producers of today. People expect a lot from film music to sustain their Indian culture and to cherish it for years to come. Nowadays Music Directors depend on keyboard players who are the real background of the music composed. Thus there is no artistic connection between the Music Directors and the Key board players.Acoustic musicians are replaced by electric key board players. Could this be one of the reasons that the music of today is deplorable?
